Hatamoto Armour of an Ii Clan Samurai
Former Collection Japan
Japan, Edo period (1603–1868)
Iron, copper, leather, silk, wood, gilded gold, horse hair
Overview
This suit of armour dates to the early to mid Edo period, a time when armour remained fully functional and closely tied to service and rank. Formed as a complete and unified gusoku, it reflects the authority and readiness expected of a hatamoto in service to one of the Tokugawa regime’s most trusted clans.
Finished in subdued russet toned lacquer with restrained red accents and light blue sugake odoshi associated with the Ii clan of Hikone, the armour carries a quiet but commanding presence. It is equally suited to serious collecting or as a powerful focal piece within an interior setting.
The Armour

The World of the Ii Clan
Armour associated with the Ii clan sits at the centre of early Edo authority. The clan’s position was secured through the service of Ii Naomasa, whose loyalty to Tokugawa Ieyasu at Sekigahara placed the Ii among the most trusted families of the Tokugawa state.
Following Sekigahara, the Ii were established at Hikone, where they controlled a key route between Edo and Kyoto. This role placed the clan in direct service to the Tokugawa government throughout the Edo period.
In the early Edo period, armour remained fully functional. At the same time, Tokugawa rule required clear identification. Armour worn by hatamoto in Ii service followed standardised forms that communicated rank, status, and allegiance immediately. Uniformity served purpose rather than display, making authority and service visible at a glance.
