This is an exceptional example of a traditional Samurai Jinbaori surcoat, a garment worn over armour by high-ranking warriors during Japan’s feudal era. Crafted from luxurious imported textiles, highlighting the wealth and status of its original owner.
What sets this Jinbaori apart is its distinctive interior lining, which features a rare and beautifully rendered Shōhei-gawa hemp-print design. The pattern depicts playful shishi (lion) dogs, mythical creatures symbolizing protection and courage in Japanese culture, rendered in a dynamic and animated style. gilt paper sasaberi edgings.
Adding to its ornate and martial character are the epaulettes adorned with kikko-gane, which are armored hexagonal motifs that echo the shape of tortoise shells. Minor month damage as to be expected.
